As odd as it sounds, I've never really downloaded a torrent before, only the kinda thing when I used limewire. Do I need to download anything to enable me to download a torrent? Thanks

You should be looking at newsgroups tbh due to the rate torrent sites are vanishing.
I made the switch a few months ago and wish that I had done it sooner.

£8-10, although there is a deal with Astraweb where it's around (iirc) £90 for the year. But yes they are a piece of pee to use - grab a usenet client (Unzbin etc) and provider, go to a usenet site like Nzbmatrix, find what you want, click the link for the NZB file and watch it max out your connection (usual case; usually see 1.9-2.1MB/s on my 20Mb connection).

I have just switched over a couple of weeks ago - and ditto, I wish I had sooner! I found a free 14 day trial and even on a trial I was seeing download speeds of 5mb/s

I use Astraweb, 20Mb with Virgin and get 2.2MB/s.
Best thing is you can setup CouchPotato and sickbeard to automatically download films/tv that you want

The content available through news groups is superior too. I found SO many engineering books that I had been borrowing from the library because they were too expensive to buy. I couldnt find them on any torrent sites

What other search sites are there? Using nzbmatrix now, but seems a lack of content under the 20days thing.
Im new as of 10mins ago to this, setup a usenetserver.com account (freetrial) and using unzbin, is there anything i need to do to speed it up etc, or is it all automatically done?

Buy the membership, fair amount of content on there. Otherwise there is Binsearch, which i find a bit of an arse to use, or NZBsRus.

It's a Highwinds provider from the looks of it but i would basically follow the guidelines on their FAQ page. Make sure you're using their SSL connection (ie: secure.Usenetserver.com / that's if the free supports it) which might help if your ISP packet shapes, set the max connections (believe it's 10 but double check) then try the different SSL ports (443, 563 and 8080).

1. sign up to somebody like usenetserver or astraweb from the above link. (the link i posted above was cheaper than just going on the site directly when I registered a few years ago)
2. download a program like "grabit" or "sabnzbd"
3. add a new server to grabit/sabnzbd
4. go on a site like nzbmatrix and download what you want and click the nzb icon
probably missed something critical lol.
Grabit is very good compared to something like utorrent as it also automatically unzips to specified directory which is great for media servers etc. Also soo much better than torrents as doesnt depend on peers and no uploads

Well impressed with this.
Downloaded 10gb of data last night in around 4-5hours. Used to take me 2 or 3 days with torrents!

For anyone who doesn't understand usenet; you will download at the maximum speed your line can take, i.e. the speed your router is syncing at.

Go for Astraweb, for ~£6 you can test it for a month and cancel if you don't want to go any further. I don't think they do trials, then again I think I read the other day you can get your money back if you cancel within 14 days.
On the unlimited packages with Astraweb they don't allow multiple IP's to connect at any one time, however I think the packages where you buy so much data (e.g. 1 TB for $50) they do allow multiple connections.
If you want to share an unlimited package, you will just have to wait ~15 minutes or so between the person you're sharing with being able to connect and download (i.e until the connections are dropped completely).
