Not seen anything about this but apple finally realised people like to protect the back from scratching.
I put a gel cover on the back of mine with my smart cover but this seems a better solution.

My sister got a rip off version of the original on eBay for about £3. The mark up that Apple charge is astonishing, no suprises there though.
Quite suprises they didn't make a big deal about the new cover and call it "revolutionary" or "magical"

Apple's actually the first company to ever protect the backside of a tablet. Also, the materials the case is made from are a new invention by Apple, that shares all trademarks of plastic but has a more fancy name.
They also seem to have chosen the available colors based on what will look good in a child's room...

£40 for a case isn't that bad if the quality matches.
My Kindle cover was £50, which is half the value of the kindle but it's worth every penny.

I have a gel one off amazon, works well and I prefer the feel of it to the pad being "naked" it cost £8 and has gone yellow. Go figure.
Ill buy one if it fits the 2

I've got an exact cover from Amazon. £15. Leather with plastic cover on rear. Magnetic cover so turns the iPad on/off.

I got a gel one from Amazon too. I have the smart cover but only use it if I take my ipad anywhere to protect the screen really.

Was at the store this morning, thought I'd take a punt with one - much better than the 11" notebook case I was sold as an iPad case on eBay

I got my smart cover a year ago, and it still looks good as new. I expect if i go past an apple store or if I'm in duty free i might pick up the new one.

The red ones look nice, I just thought I'd go for a nice neutral colour but I was tempted by it

Ed, does it come apart? I.e. could you buy two and combine the front and back part?

Nope, it's a soft shell which has been stamped out of one piece of material, then it has a rubber bumper inlayed into it, which the iPad pushes into.

Shame, I was thinking a combination between the red and dark grey would be pretty smart.

Was almost expecting you'd have to buy the rear case for £40 and the front case for another £40 It would be quite cool if it was a standard magnetic smart cover that could be detached easily and a bumper to cover over the back when you need it.
