I know you lot are a lot more savvy on these things then me, to cut a long story short I have a member in the household who likes to hog the bandwidth, watch movies online, stream, torrents etc. This is making it annoying for other people in the household.

Basically there are 3 pc's , the main PC downstairs (connected to router) then two upstairs, all connected wirelessly to the router, the router is a Dlink DSL-2740R and i have been reading about QOS and making people priorities? how does this work?

i have looked in the owners manual for the router and it says it can be done and the details which need to be entered are:

Traffic Class Name:
Wireless Transmit Priority: (drop down options on router)
Source IP Address: (dropdown options on router)
Source Subnet Mask:
UDP/TCP Source Port:
Destination IP Address
Destination Subnet Mark:

Is the above all stuff i can find on my router or laptop, and also am i entering the above details for the device i want to make priority, basically i want to make my PS3 priority for playing games over someone else streaming and watching videos online etc.

Is the PS3 connected via cable or wireless?

According to the manual:

ftp://ftp.dlink.co.uk/dsl_routers_modems/dsl-2740r/dsl-2740r_manual_v1.00.pdf

You need to pick either wireless qos or lan qos, so if the PS3 is wired then go to LAN QOS:

Traffic Class Name - this is just a name, so if we set one up for your ps3 call it ps3

Wireless Transmit Priority - Select whichever one sounds better, it will be called 'gold' or 'platinum' or 'best effort'

Source IP address: IP address of your PS3, you can find it in your System Settings on the PS3

Source Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.255

UDP/TCP Source port: No idea what ports it uses, try 0 (this should mean all)

Desintation IP address: 0.0.0.0 (means everywhere- not sure if it will work thou)

Destination subnet mask: 0.0.0.0 (ditto)

Worth a shot.

If it's wireless then either stick the IP on the 'preferred' list (usually under the wireless options) or give the PS3 a static IP.
Also handy list of PS3 ports - http://community.us.playstation.com/t5/PSN-General-Discussion/PS3-Ports-need-to-be-open/td-p/27357477?start=15&tstart=0

source ip range is your PS3 ip (put it in both boxes)

select 'ANY' - that means any data from the PS3 will be prioritised

You probably need to QoS the other devices with lower priorities and stating the obvious, make sure you reboot the router if you haven't.
