and it's doing my fucking head in.
My mate gave me her laptop to have a look to get it bit faster/see why it was overheating/and not connecting to the internet via a netgear wireless card. When I first got it, i left it on for over 2hrs with no problems, uninstalled several anti-virus programs ( ) and left it for bit longer was alright. had a play about with it over the weekend, shut down couple of times while trying to get it connected to the net with no luck So I decided to get a copy of XP SP2, and re-install it. But halfway through the installation the part when it's formatting the partitions it just shuts down and I've gotta start again. Might just be becuase it's a very old machine but surely still be able to use it. Its not got the battery in im running it off AC power. So it's not a flat battery.
I've deleted all the partitions so I cant get onto the home screen (if you like).
The laptop in question is a Packard Bell MIT-LYN08.
I read somewhere that it could be due to the Ram?
Anyone shed some light please?
Thank you.

It would just freeze or blue screen if it was RAM.
It's probably shutting down because it is being cooked.

Well you probably should find out why it is overheating... Fan/vents are probably clogged up with crap.

Thanks Sam.

If it shuts down after a few hours/time period it could be over heating caused by lack of air movement inside the laptop, this is caused by dust, it gets so thick in the fans it stops them moving.
First port of call is to take it apart and clean it out with a hover/canned air, you won't have to take it all apart for this btw.
If that doesn't do it and you find it blue screening then its possibly memory - my suggestion is to use something like memtest which can be downloaded for free (http://www.memtest.org/) and burned to a CD - once you have this you can boot off the CD (so no operating system running) and leave it to do memory tests, this will typically pick up errors.
If you have fucked ram, go to www.crucial.com/uk and find some replacements.

As you're trying to install SP2, it could be a disk driver issue - I seem to remember SP2 gets a bit twitchy if you're trying to install it onto a SATA drive as SATA drives weren't around when SP2 was released. Also if the drive is greater than 120gb you may run into issues. If the hard drive is IDE and/or less than 120gb then ignore this post.

It would just tell you no hard disk detected if it was a SATA problem

Check the IP settings, is it set to DHCP?
Post the IP settings up here.
Can you ping the default gateway?

First of all, make sure Internet Explorer is not set to use a proxy server (see http://www.ehow.com/how_2033232_change-proxy-settings.html for details).
Secondly, as Will says check the IP settings. You can open up a command prompt (Start > Run... > cmd [click OK] and then type in ipconfig /all.
You can also ping a server from that same command prompt by typing in something like ping google.com.
Let us know how you get on.

Different browser (try opera), try pinging an address (4.2.2.1) and bbc.co.uk to see if it's a connection issue or a DNS issue
