I use VLC to watch things on my iPad but it got taken off appstore. not sure if u can download the .ipa and then just sync with itunes. Then can drag and drop all AVI files etc without conversion and works spot on.

I use Handbrake, or Any Video Converter. Both work well, although AVC has proper profiles for the new iPad, but it takes a bit longer.

HDVideoPlayer. Load up iTunes, go to apps tab, scroll to bottom and click on the app and import files. Simples.

This ^^ Why bother converting when you don't have to.

You'll get better battery life if you encode to H.264 as software decoding can be a bit thirsty - not too much of a problem though.

I watched Project X and the latest Mission Impossible(in AVI format) on my iPad3 on a flight to Cyprus a couple of weeks ago and it used around 15% battery on about 75-80% brightness with two sets of headphones using a splitter. Would be interesting to see how much encoded versions would have used.

Yeah i did similar on flight to Malaysia, I watched 2 films and lots of eps of tv programs etc, had on about half brightness and still had decent battery left when got there.
seems far easier to just select the AVI and press send imo

There's an old post on Doom9.org which someone has done all the calculations and it's a marginal difference, a small amount of minutes at most.
