Right, I can't for the life of my find the 'Mac App Store' on my Macbook It's not in the Dock, i've tried searching for it but it's not come up with anything

It says i'm running Mac OS X 10.5.8. which I have no idea what it means And i can't find anything on the Apple site to help me, just tells me to buy Mountain Lion from my Mac App Store found on my Dock, which i don't have anywhere...

Help please!

10.5.8 is Leopard.

Mac App Store was only released for 10.6.8 and upwards (Snow Leopard) so i'm afraid you'll have to update if you want it! Think a single Snow Leopard install licence is £20 or similar nowadays

Do a search as it has been asked a handful of times.
Essentially, pay to upgrade to SL then pay again for ML. Purchase ML using another OSX system with App Store, then burn the ML install to DVD or image a USB stick with it. Or just nab it.

No, Apple don't sell SL any more as it's two versions old.

I don't know if you can buy a retail box of ML from an actual Apple store.

If you know someone with a newer version of OS X on their Mac get them to buy it for you and put it on a USB stick as Dom says.

if you upgrade does it get rid of your files as if you put a new OS on, or does it actually 'upgrade' the current one and leave files in tact?

It leaves everything, just upgrades the OS. There are a few purists who believe it to be much better to do a clean install though.

Never did so myself.

You'd have eBay for a SL retail copy then go from there.

Tbf, Apple have made it a royal PITA to upgrade with this download-only bollocks and the easiest would just to nab a retail copy; it's only 4GB, so it shouldn't take long.

When upgrading my old machine I just bought SL second hand and did two upgrades. Not too big a deal tbh.

Downloads are the future, it's just a bit annoying you can't install the App Store on older Macs. I guess the problem will gradually go away as more people upgrade though.

Quite a few on eBay for £15-30; just make sure it's a retail copy and not one that has be bundled with a Mac.

I don't know if it's the case for SL, but older versions like Tiger for example were plain grey or something like that if they were bundled with the system.

I have that same disc as Russ, cost me about £25 or something from apple when it came out. Pain in the ass now having to download updates when some of us are still suffering slow as fuck broadband
