my mates just asked me and ive no idea, he says his laptop is dead when he turns it on it just goes to a black screen asking for a pin.
apple have said its been wiped through iCloud and encrypted, theyre going to try and sort it but if they cant it will need a new logic board.

I would suspect that he'd be able to recover a lot of his data if it has been wiped; obviously it'd require taking the drive out and using another system.
Similarly i would hazard a guess that there is a way of removing the the pin lock as well without changing the logic board.
Obviously if it's within warranty then get Apple to sort it.
Edit - Evil's link seems to sum up a lot of it. And if you do a Google around removing the pin-lock, then there are apparently a handful of solutions.
