Today my boss has brought her iPad2 in, and I had a little go on it, and was really impressed and has made me want one. . I currently have a Sony Vaio laptop nothing wrong with it what-so-ever However being an Apple virgin I do have some questions. I'd be looking at the wifi version.
- Can you use them to write letters? As not all the time but often I have to write letters.
- Would I be daft getting rid of my laptop to get an iPad? (There is another laptop within the household).
- Can you get adapters for docking stations for music etc?
Any help would be appreciated.

I've rarely used my laptop since I got my iPad.
Get the new iPad for the retina screen.

1. Yes. You can use a bluetooth keyboard and wordprocessing software to write letters.
You could of course use the on screen keyboard, but for prolonged use this will strain your neck.
If you want to print you'll need an AirPrint or mail-print enabled printer or mail them to a laptop and print from there.
2. Yes. Think of every time you download a file or piece of software. Your iPad will not do this. Think of an iPad as a toy, not as something to replace a laptop. Not for the average user, anyway.
3. Not sure what you mean, but probably, yes.

What ever the release date of the new iPad was. I only turn it on every now and then to do updates and do a back up.

I still prefer to use the laptop in 99% of cases when at home and leave the iPad to the Mrs since all she does is browse clothes shops and facebook.

Let's talk in another 6 months then.
I think for 3 months I hardly turned on my laptop.
Then 3 months of mostly using the iPad, but with a fair bit of laptop usage.
Then daily use of both.
Then mostly laptop usage.
Then hardly iPad usage.
Now it's in a cupboard and never charged when I want to use it for something.
It's a gimmick and a toy, but a good one at that. I love browsing on it and like the way you interact with websites when not using a mouse.
In the end, however, the gap between my phone and laptop is just too narrow to need filling.

It's the same at our house. Missus uses it for online shopping and cooking recipes.

Tbh in my eyes I cant really justify the extra £100+ difference for a slightly better screen and better camera.

It's not a slightly better screen, it's a massively better screen and £70.

I wouldn't either, pointless.
If you're mostly browsing and playing crappy little games then iPad is for you, no doubt.
I must be about the only person in the world who prefers a laptop because it can actually sit up rather than being lay down

I'm the same, iPad is handy, not a laptop replacement though.

So tbh it does sound like the iPad would be better, as i don't do much stuff within MS Office only the odd letter here and there, and I do mainly go online with my laptop.

Unless your laptop is fairly new, it will not hold much resale value, so just hang on to it and use it when need be?

Amen to that. I have a laptop, iPad, and PC. Laptop has been under the bed for months now gathering dust. PC still gets used for some games, especially FM, and the iPad is what I pick up and browse if I'm just chilling about the house.

Fuck it Laptop is going up for sale tonight. It's couple years old. I am on it every night (facebook/CS/Briskoda) but it pisses me off as I'm limited for space to put it.

You don't have enough space to keep a laptop?

When I'm using it, it's on my lap and then need a side table for the mouse and all the bloody wires everywhere. It has got a trackpad but it bugs me.

A laptop that is a couple of years old is worth £100 tops.
Just keep it for when the time comes (and it will) that the iPad doesn't do something you need to do.

I don't think I'll be the same. I don't do any PC gaming, don't do any word processing or anything like that. I don't download music illegally. I just use it for browsing really which is pretty much all my laptop was used for, this is just handier and nicer to use If I download a film or music it's through iTunes.
Only thing I can think of that I would have to use my laptop instead of the iPad is streaming football games but I get most of those through Sky now so I don't do that very often either Maybe once every couple of months.
