Firmly decided this was the first COD game I wouldn't buy and now I'm looking at reviews thinking I want to try it...
I need to hear from some one who also hated the first BLOPS whether this is worth a purchase or if I should just stick with MW3.

Nah, not at all tbh. 
I had a break for about four months where I went back to COD4, but for the past couple of months I've been playing MW3 a lot.
Still, I've only clocked about 4-5 days play time which I think is a fraction of the likes of you and Jas.

Played a couple of hours earlier and I was shit at it.
Seemed to be second in every 50/50. The re-spawning is a bit annoying, and when you fire a shot from the sniper rifle it leaves a white trail so people know exactly where you are, also happens when you lob a grenade, which is annoying.

They've probably done that to combat quickscoping/noscoping. I think its a good idea if for that reason.

Doesn't combat quick scoping or no scoping though as in those instances people already know where you are since it will be close range.
All it does it ruin it for people who are sniping properly from a distance using stealth.
