Over the summer my employer messed my pay up massively, I wasn't paid in April and therefore double in May, then holiday pay wasn't given in August so got 1.5months pay in September.
Because of this I have paid about £260 in NI over 5 months of approx £800 a month. Months when I had the correct pay, I paid little/no NI.
I have looked on the HMRC/direct.gov sites but doesn't really detail anything about being on the PAYE system, so is it just a case of writing a letter to them explaining the situation?

Is it definitely wrong? Surely it shouldn't matter when you got paid the money, NI is just a percentage based on a couple of different thresholds?

You can't claim ni back iirc, just tax.

maybe you paid too little and the increased amount has come from the correct percentage being applied?

NI is funny, I'm not sure exactly how it works.
If you were paid 1.5 lots of pay in one month it will cost you more NI than if you were paid the same total amount over two separate months. It's a strange system.

Without knowing all of your details I can't tell if you've overpaid NI. But for £800 net a month (?) I think NI is 4% or 5% or your gross p/m
