Brother changed his socket and light fascias now the rcd has tripped. Wont come back on.
Checked all the wiring, looks ok. Could it have blown? Easy to change?

It wont trip for no reason. Either there is a wiring fault or one of the new fascias is faulty (ie internal short or something daft)

Best off taking the lives off each socket until you find the offender. We've had to do this a stupid amount of times when we rebuilt the house.

Something must be tripping it, or short somewhere, work back through the sockets removing the lives till you find the culprit.

Has he switched from metal to plastic ones? Maybe one of the light switches has a short on it resulting in a trip?

Sockets can have no power but still have a short behind it. Thats why people are saying undo them and take the power from them..

Surely the lights and sockets are on separate breakers?

Can you not try a breaker from a different circuit, ie upstairs/downstairs sockets. Would rule out the breaker that way.

If its a split board, check the neutral from the RCD protected side isnt in the non RCD side of the board.

If it just wont latch, then its fucked.

So rule out the RCD being faulty then set about fixing whatever is wired wrong.

Surely the rcd should reset if the sockets are switched off on the board?

No, it would not necessarily trip if the items are switched off at the other end.

If its tripping with nothing plugged in then the most likely cause Is a fault in the cable somewhere. Could be a pinched cable, a very tight 90 degree bend, outer sheath worn off somewhere etc. Doesn't matter if nothing is connected at the other end, if there's a dead short, it'll trip.

Pull ALL the face places off the wall (leave the cables connected) and check every cable.
Chances are you've pinched the cable somewhere or have a neutral touching an earth connection somewhere.

It goes without saying to make sure ALL connections are going to the places on the sockets, i.e Live to L, Neutral to N and earth to E.

*edit* Ive just read your last post, was it deffo blown? RCDs rarely fail.

My first thought was nicked neutral on a faceplate screw.
Do as Bart suggested and check very closely for damaged insulation on the cables especially where the screws go

About 10 years ago something similar happened in my Mums house whereby the rcd would not power the house. After about an hour it worked again. Was a bit weird! Same rcd is in today and not had that issue since.

I wired up a fused plug socket in the apartment. Did it perfect but i was paranoid something was not right and got an electrical to come and check it out for me

U2U John

He'll know what's wrong, it's only wires and screws after all.

An RCD is literally screws and wires

Is it because it took you 4 years to learn it you have to try and make out like it's difficult?

IvI has also obviously managed to fix the problem, showing how simple it is.

Might get into computers actually then I will be all knowing....should only take me a few weeks. Also I won't burn anyone's house down, or kill anyone, or myself, or have to work in shitty conditions sometimes outside.

Sounds easy.
