I did wonder that... but go on, give it a trial.
As soon as you click it, theres a big sigh of relief... like everything feels normal and good again

It's a little bit weird! Not used Windows 8 too much and probably sticking to W7 for the time being.

Got a couple of Servers running server 2012 at the moment. Hopefully i get used to this in time!

I wonder how this works - is it just an app or does it unlock the 'original' start menu as seen in W7 in some way?

I quite like Windows8 (without the start menu) now to be honest.

I'm not going to install the start menu as I'm lazy and I'll just revert!

I don't miss the start button at all. Going back on the old laptop with XP feels so old school and dated.

However I did install an App called Decor8 which allows you to change the background of the tile/lock screen which is nice.

It doesnt resemble their own design at all, its a 100% match for the Win7 start menu, so you may be right, it could be unlocked.

Deff glad I installed it now

It is going to go one of two ways. Either people will not upgrade to W8 or will become to like the no Start Menu.

I'm not going to bother with the downloading third party applications to simulate W7.

Just hit start and type what you want, using the start menu is very outdated imo

I got Win8 and don't even use the metro interface. Just open the desktop as normal and go from there.

Literally got it for the speed of booting etc

Why not? Is she unable to click BIG 'shiny' buttons?

No. She's fucking useless and struggles with technology and computers as it is, anything different to what she's used to and she doesn't even try to use it

This generally applies to a lot of people over the age of ~45
I think it would apply to a lot of staff at our company, which is why I have zero plans of adding any windows 8 machines.

My mum had the sky remote the other day and passed it me and asked me to record a program for her.

I said, FFS, you do it and il tell you how to do it, at least then next time you will know how to do it yourself.

She really wasnt interested in finding out how to do it with guidance by me and started kicking off about it saying I was being unhelpful, all shes asked me to do is record something for her etc etc, all she actually wanted was for someone else to do it for her with zero interest in finding out, i find a lot of older peoples attitudes are like this towards basic tech tasks.
