Really just looking for the simplest way of connecting my PC to the TV.

Simplest way and without spending is just connect VGA to VGA on your current card.

Will the card in the link support dual monitors?
Thing is the PC is about 8 metres from the tv and I've been told VGA over this distance isn't recommended. 
Pretty clueless about this as you can tell.

I have a VGA cable and a separate 3.5mm jack lead connected between my pc and tele. VGA is for the video and the jack is for sound.

OP never mentioned running two screens at once. Assumed he was wanting like I have and just connecting to the TV full time.
You don't need to pay over the odds for dual monitors, I got a card with twin DVI off ebay for a fiver. DVI is digital so you can just get a DVI>HDMI lead, sorted.

Couldn't tell you if that's legit or not but I've had a 15m cable running with mine and it doesn't make a blind bit of difference. Maybe makes a difference if you're gaming? Something I don't do on the PC.

Over a short distance there's no quality difference between VGA and HDMI.
VGA doesn't do 3D, LAN or sound though.

If your current card has both DVI and VGA you could probably just run VGA to your monitor and use a DVI to HDMI converter for the TV.
Try to Google your card to see if it supports dual monitors.

It was more in relation to Davey's question if people still use VGA. There isn't much HDMI and even less DVI does that VGA doesn't.

I've got VGA running over 20 meters in some places at the school, as long as it's shilded and not running next to 230V it's fine

I use pound shop HDMI.. Generally digital signals either work or they dont  ..
As for VGA V's HDMI.. I certainly can see the difference at high resolutions but to be fair you only really notice it on static images or text when watching movies its hard to notice.
I was just supprised that people were still using PC's that only had VGA out, I havent even seen one for a while even my dad's old PC he just replaced was DVI and he's behind the times

For a minimal spend media centre, an old machine for £30 which will typically only have VGA out as standard works just fine. No point spending more to achieve no extra, besides what's the point having amazing all singing all dancing graphics cards and connections so you can play some compressed movie rip you've downloaded off TPB?

Your eyesight most be superhero level then. 
I've run a dual screen setup with two calibrated Eizo monitors. One on DVI, one on VGA. There was no visible or measurable difference at all between the two. This was with 3 metres of regular cable that came with the PC.

@ 2560 x 1440 you can see a haze around text and it a slight 'flicker' effect when scrolling.
