When out driving the engine temprature wont cool down and sits at 100+ and when the fan kicks in near the red it doesn't really cool it down.

Personally i feel the fan should kick in before the 100 mark.

Any ideas what could be causeing it not to cool?

Thermostat, could be opening really late.

I'd try a new sensor (The single wire one), since it could just be that giving you false readings.

Also, the fan kicks in at a true 98degrees (and switch off at 96), I'd expect the gauge to be showing 100 or more when it does.

I thought the thermostat was at fault so bought a new one and it is still the same, also tested them in a boiling pan of water to see if they open and the new one opens very little or if at all and was causing the water in the radiator to stay cold so refitted the old one as that one opened more than the new one and the radiator gets hot evenly across now but it wont cool down when driving even with no front grill in the bumper.

Also both sensors on the termostat were replaced.

All pipes get hot with the old thermostat refitted but wasn't with the new one and the radiator gets nice & hot right across with the old thermostat but would stay cold with the new one on & the heater in the car blows nice & hot, would it make any difference the pipes go on the heater matrix which way round they were?

And i can't really see a cool running thermostat making any difference tbh.

The thermostat that opens more will be allowing the engine to run cooler by letting the coolant to flow faster so a cool running stat will open earlier but also may open more or have a bigger flow bore!
The heater pipes been wrong shouldn`t make any difference but you never know, did you change anything or this problem just start one day?Are you putting antifreeze/summer coolant back in when refilling?

Why not? They make them for this reason. Mine ran hot, cool running stat took it down nicely

Suppose it maybe worth trying a cool running thermostat then.Im just using plain water at the moment until it's solved so im not wasting coolant.

Just for daftness iv been up and removed the thermostat and took it out again to see if it made much difference and when i fired it back up it was sitting at 90 as it was still warm from having it out earlier and by the time i got the garage locked and set off it sat at 95 and stayed there while out driving until i stopped then it started to creep back up but not like it was.Any other suggestions?

I had a cool running thermostat in mine and it only went over 90 when I sat in traffic, I also mounted the radiator as close to the bumper as possible

Think i may have sorted it.

The temp sensor on the thermostat that gives the reading inside the car on the clock has been faulty,Iv borrowed a spare one off a mate and the car sits at 90 degrees now when out driving instead of it shooting straight up to 100 and staying there and the fan kicks in at 92 degrees like it should and cool it down a bit more
