Can't advice on place to buy the Mac, but they all come bundled with iWork (Apple's office suite), so unless there's a particular reason you need MS Office I wouldn't bother.

You've got two options for Office 2011 (Mac) - either, purchase 'Microsoft Office Home & Student 2011 for Mac' which is around £95 (have a look on Amazon) or grab a Office 365 Home subscription which is around £80 per year.
It's rumoured, no official word, that a new version of Mac Office will be released either at the end of this year or early next.
Obviously there's the non-legit route.

Particular reason for Office, like the rest of the world using it. Anyone we deal with in work who buys a mac without Office, quickly contacts us to get office for them.

As John said, if you use your laptop for business or as a student you will soon require MS Office. If you can hold out for the new version of office i personally would do.

I need office for work programs like excel, and at work we use windows desktops.
How much is the student discount?

One of the cheapest way is via buying through one of the education portals. Even if your not a student it will still work i.e. http://store.apple.com/uk_edu_5000677 - For macs its usually 15% off.
Other than that keep an eye on hotukdeals as they keep appearing every so often. Depends if you want a standard spec or special build

I've been using Google Drive instead of Office for ages now. Works really well (no, really!) - but if you've got to work with Office users then you could have problems.

I would rather lose by a mile because i built my own car, than win by an inch because someone else built it for me.

How is that relevant to anyone who's not part of that scheme?
I can get it for free from various legitimate places.

Might as well download a volume licence one that doesn't need activated. Equally illegal but £15 cheaper.

We have about 15 Macs at work not running MS Office. I've also personally used Mac for some 7 years without running MS Office.
It's really not too difficult to survive without.

If this is for work use which from Dans comments it looks like it is then that doesn't work as its home software. If its for business you might as well do it properly or don't pay at all.
We have the same problem where by we are moving to Mac but people need to buy their own licenses as the volume deal has not been sorted. Office is the only option when dealing with the big corporations from my experience.

John sounds like someone who works in corporate IT - I don't think people who work in that environment realise that some people don't make Powerpoints and spreadsheets all day for a living.

Yes Ed, that's all businesses use Ms Office for and not the fact that applications like Outlook and Excel are vastly superior to anything Apple/Google have pumped out

I do work for companies with 2 users up to hundreds.
Across the board, anyone with a Mac needs Office, it's a certainty.

You'll also definitely run out of space if you get a 128GB version.

Avoid the 128GB version like the plague - everyone I know who has one has regretted being tight. Fortunately you can upgrade them to just under 1TB now.

I went for the 256 version and its only just big enough if i want to keep my photos on there. I don't have space for any VMs etc. Wish i had a 512 one although at least on the new ones it has USB 3.0 so external drives are more of an option for some things
