is just a pull and pull and pull theory, took me ages to get mine off.......garage couldn't do it either.........they had an idea of undo'in the nut and leaving it off, then it should work its way off, some day, i quote ......"but it might pop off whilst driving"
stupid fcuks...i got my bro to wobble it like mad and it came off.

Don't hit the steering column, even if you have a block of wood.
Its designed to collapse under impact and you run a great risk of damaging it if you hit it.

your only tapping it!!! u'd need to hit it a hell of a thump for it to collapse or damage it!
i suggest you find a stronger mate!

You'll be suprised how little effort it will take to damage the column. Even if theres no visible damage, it could fook up when you need it most.
My wheel came off with very little effort. Take the centre nut off then put it back on a few threads. Grab the wheel at the 3 and 9 oclock positions and try and rock it back and forth, this worked for me. Good luck.
