cams usually give about a 10% increase in power, but your power band will shift to a higher rev range and possible suffer lower down the range

Dont bother mate. Seriously, this engine cant really be tuned because of the way the fuel is delivered. For the cost you wont feel the benefit.

mate the fact that ur car is a single point injection what ever engine mods u do u wont get their full potential
cams, chips, head work, inlet manifold, exhaust manifold and system, these are all worth while mods, but u will never see their full potential

exactly, you'll hardly notice 6bhp. But you wont even get that with the spi.
For the cost of a cam kit and superchip you could have a 1.6 8v converted. Or put the £600 towards buying a sport or gsi.

You could look through some breakers yards for an M.P.I. inlet manifold if it would fit off an early SRi or something then it would be worth it.

I think the heads are different. You would also need the loom and ecu.

Yeah the spi seriously isn't worth tuning. I wouldn't even bother in my mpi engine, save the money for a conversion or as miles said buy a bigger car.
