Right here goes. My engine is X16XE. The X at the start corresponds to Vauxhalls own emissions rating. Higher the number, the more friendly it is. the 16 stands for the engine capacity, being 1600cc. The next letter is X again and denotes the compression ratio. L = 8.5 - 9:1 N = 9 - 9.5:1 etc etc. The Last letter is E and stands for the fuelling system. E stands for multi point fuel injection. Z is single point, V = carbs and D is diesel.

regarding emmisions, the X stands for Euro 2, anything less is Euro 1. Z is Euro 3. Euro 4 is to phased in in the EU over the next couple of months. Lets take your engine, Z12XE right? Z stands for emissions, 12 means its 1200cc, X means its compression ratio is between 10 and 11.5:1 . E means its multi-point injection. Easy.

any you want. It depends on how much you want to spend, how much power etc and how much hassle.

it might be hard for you to find a fully functional 1.8 SRi enginefor a transplant. Your best bet if you want to do this is trade in the 1.2 SXi for a 18 SRi. You would need to uprate brakes as well. Alternatively, look at fitting the C20XE engine from the Astra GTE, Cavalier GSi or Calibra 2.0. This is a difficult transplant and may caost you a lot of money, and you have to run 2 ECU's for the electronics to work properly.

the compression ratio is the difference in pressure between each of the cylinders. The difference on the XE engines is usually no more than 1Bar.

so i take it the 20xe was built b4 the emissions laws, cos the 20xe doesn't run with a cat so it must be less than euro 1
cool

but its not just called a 20XE is it? it is C20XE which designates it as Euro 1 achieved. Really early engines wouldnt have the letter at the start, but we are going right back here. A catalytic converter was optional on the Redtop lump because it was designed before the introduction of compulsory catalytic converter laws. In 1992/1993, the C20XE was still in mass production, but didnt have to have a Catalytic Converter by UK Law.

Thats wrong. The compression ratio refers to volume between the top of the piston and the bottom of the head/valves on tdc on any bore. The higher the compression ratio the smaller this space is, so the air/fuel will be compressed more so the bigger the bang = more power. Turbo's have a lower compression ratio so they can force more charge into the cylinder (i think)

nope there is 3 different versions of the red top engine 20xe 153bhp(no cat) 20xej 150bhp(no cat) c20xe 150bhp(cat)
20xe found in astra mk 2 gte's
20xej found also found in mk 2 gte's
c20xe is found in gsi's(cav/astra and some calibra's)
my engine code reads 20 xe theres no prefix c un like my mates astra gsi which reads c 20 xe,bassically the c20xe is the newer red top brought in around 1992 when the cat laws where introduced so this engine needs a cat,how ever the 20xe and 20xej don't need a cat and won't run with 1 due to having no lamba sensor i passed my mot with out a cat,i've spoke to the tester about it as my car is a w reg 2000,and he said they don't test the car cos it doesn't make emissions they test the year of engine as thats where the gas's come from

its bassically the same as the 20xe except the 20xej had a throttle body mod in some way which restricted it to 150bhp,was speaking to a mate the other day who had a xej in his astra
