Today just hasn't been my day, amoungst everything else that went wrong my fan belt snapped.

I went and got a new fan belt and got it fitted at a garage near me, well the problem is that now when I rev my engine or drive at medium to high revs I get a whistling from my engine. I aint bothered about the noise, I like it actually, the worry is that I think something may be wrong.

The only thing changed in the engine was the fanbelt, no whistle before and now there is. Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers,
Sean.

Is the noise coming from the fan belt? Open the bonnet stick your head under and rev it too see where the noise is coming from.

You never know, the garage might have stuck a turbo on?

the noise is probably coming from the fan belt, its too loose, adjust it cos its slipping. i used to have the same problem in my iveco turbo daily and i used to wake up my whole street when i went to work at 5 in the morning

Its not a screeching from the fan belt. Its a proper whistle.

Hard to explain really. The bloke said it was tight enough, the reason the old one snapped was because it was too tight so he checked it and said it was as tigbht as it should be, he also said if there are any problems he will fix them if its down to the fan belt so he is pretty sure the fan belt aint at fault.

If it was too tight then it could be a shafted bearing on the alternator....

Looseness causes squeals, tightness cause a whine.

Well it did it before when I fitted a new fan belt, and then it stopped after about 1 week, and now the new fanbelt is on it started again. Same model of fanbelt from the same company, its a Goodyear belt.

So do you think I should slacken off the belt??

I aint too sure about it because the guy at the garage was certain it was on at the right level of tightness.

if your corsa aint got an automatic tensioner on the belt they are a sod to tighten so be warned dont slacken it or it will be looser than a prostitutes fadge

It has the bolt on the back that holds to the alternator, loosening and tightening the bolts shifts the alternator forwards and backwards. So making the belt tight and loose.

i've got a similar noise, but only when car warmed up and its not all the time and the sound doesnt last long, been told it could be either the tension spring on the brake pads or exhaust bracket
