My girfriends Cambelt went yesterday...coasting at about 15-20mph...it is unfortunately a 16v 1.4 Ecotec engine an the AA man didn't sound to promising...i am gonna change the belt and check the valves....what are the chances of them not all being bent?
And any idea's on cost per valve?
Cheers

valves cost about 20 wuid each if i remember rightly from when my cam belt went you will probably need to replace all of them. you may also have damage to the head, water pump etc so if your doing it yourself make sure you know what your doing m8. good luck

28 quid each i was quoted from vaux
thats 16 valves in total
id say 8 or less will be bent on average, BUT 16vs are notoriouse for bending a LOT of them
mine only did 3 tho, and what a job it was to get hold of some
bought a second hand head for a 10er in the end
need cambelt, head gasket etc also
was a 2 day job 4 me as i couldnt get any bits (was a bank holiday also)
good luck

also check that they havnt damaged the pistons and the cam
a week after i did mine, althought it looked ok, the cam needed replacing as it had been damaged by the bent valves
also might need the lifters doing (look for scorring on them)

Same happened to me!! Bent all 16v marked all pistons etc.
Depending on the age/mileage of the car take it to Vaux as they repaired mine and paid 90% of the cost. Only paid the 10% for the years warranty!! My car was R reg done 17K when it happened. The belts were originally guarantied to do 40K!!!!!
See what they say!

haynez says 80k, but 40k to be on safe side
i know some1 in a v6 vectra who had a new 1 fitted to be on save side, then the adjuster fooked and snapped the belt a week later (it was vauxhauls fault as they fitted it incorrectly) and all 24 valves bent, along with a VERY large bill

Cheers for the info/hints/advice lads..MUCH appreciated!
The car is a 1994-M SRi. I really dont know when the belt was last done as it had a vague history with it...(lesson learnt there)...it has covered 73k or there abouts, i will check all the above stuff and see if its worth replacing valves or getting a 2nd hand head.
Many thanks
Joe

Thats what happened to my corsa, belt was about 20k and 2 ish years old. It snapped due to incorrectly fitted tensioner, i went to vaux and basically got told to SOD OFF!

I had the belt snap in a 1400 Astra, my Mrs was driving at the time and continuously turned it over, trying to start it
I was expecting a huge bill, but luckilly only two bent valves, cost about a tenner each then.
Expect the worst but you might get lucky. Crazy innit, the life of the engine relies on a rubber band

Get parts from autovaux. Much cheaper than vaux. Check all valves in a drill to see if they are bent. Might be easier to buy a complete secondhand head and just drop it on.
