i did mine off the remote feed for the amp, so that they are only on when the amp is. could also run them off the boot light so they on when bootlid open, or off amp power terminal

i just put the live wire of the neon (i used a high level brake light but is same thing) onto the remote wire terminal on my amp and then put the negative wire to an earth point - could use earth terminal on amp as well

it may appear to work okay, but in reality its not advisable to use the remote feed from a headunit to run a light, neon or whatever. The headunit is only able to supply a very small current to simply act as a switch line to turn on amps, aerials etc... you could run the remote feed onto a relay and switch them that way though, reduces the risk of headunit damage.
Or, as said just wire to the boot light!
