well you probably rag the nuts off it in that short mile so im not suprised. Why dont you just walk to work? It will probably do your car a favour.

re0set the ecu by taking the negative terminal off the battery. leave for obout 1 hour to 1 1/2 hours and put it back.
then start your car (don't revv it) leave is for a about 10- 15 secs then take it for a spin. drive normally as u would do.
the ecu should set to your driving conditons

WTF?!? ECU set to your driving conditions?? its constantly updating itself when the car is ticking over. Its got nothing to do with resetting the ECU at all, that wont do anything.

Disconnecting the battery for that amount of time will not wipe the ECU's memory. I had to leave mine overnight. I drive a 1.6 too and get about the same, and if taking it easy, i have seen 320miles from a tank.

Driving 1 mile from cold continuously will use loads of fuel, that sounds about right to me.
Engines use loads of fuel when cold, and your engine will never get anywhere near warm.
Walk.

I had this problem before i sold my engine. It ran fine, just drank loads.
Found out that the engine's valves had dropped, nearly touching the piston, needed the valves reset.

just to give u a ball park figure mate when i fill up i dont let my tank get really really empty or anythin but it normally costs about £27-30 to fill up and i can easily get 350 miles out of that driven it fairly sensibly and mines a 1.4 16v too

when i forts got my 1.4 16v i was getting around 300-325 miles to a full tank then when the cams went in and echaust and decat etc i used to get 60 miles from £10
now got a 2litre and that does 250-300 on a full tank

I rekon its all in the mind. performance mods make you drive more agressively therefore decreasing mpg. put a tenner in and drive it easy til its gone and do the same if your arsing about. and see the difference

Do you mean the cam timing was out?

and the valves on an ecotec almost touch the pistons anyway, as the pistons have valve pockets in the top of them
