It depends on two factors.
Compression (nominal)
Port design. (significant)
Putting a 1.2i SPi head on a 1400 blocvk will ofeer little improvement as the port design remains the same and only compression will be raised. (square port)
Putting a Early 1.2/1.3 head on a 1400 bottom end will gain performance provided the head that was on previously was a carb'd engine, as you will be switching from sqaure ports to catherdral ports, this is only provided that the inlet manifold is also swapped for the correct type for that head.
Putting a MPI 1.4 head will give a gain in performance as they have round ports (best for flow) and also have larger valves. However you cannot get a single carb manifold for this type of head and you would need to modify a 1.3SR manifold to suit.
Also is worth mentioning that is the bottom end is well used then raising the compression won't help things to much as it will increase the strain on the rings wearing them much more rapidly.
Have a dig round on nova load, they have loads abotu the 8v tuning.
This doesn't apply to the 16v heads as you cannot swap a 1.216v head on to a 1.4 bottom end.
