i noticed steam leaking from the bonnet today in traffic, engine was hotter than normal (96-97 degrees)!! i parked straight away and did not drive the car since, opened bonnet noticed no coolant water left.. and could see some of it leaking/gushing out slowly from the side of the top left corner of the engine somwere, right near the alternator area in this pic!!....

any ideas for now guys, before i go get it checked, because i dont know wat to do! would it still be safe if i topped up the water and drove it to the garage?????? could it jus simply be a radiator pipe broke/cracked? or headgasket(no creamy residue under filler cap though)? or whorst case cracked head??!!

heres a pic of the rear of a 1.6 16v engine and were its circled in red behind the black inlet pipe is were i reckon it leaked from???

if you have lost coolant and it has got very hot the head will prob need a skim and a gasket anyway! Could be any number of things you have said might be worth having the system pressure tested at a garage!

If you do driv e it keep an eye on the temp guage as soon as it starts getting hot stop!!

thats my bet. theres a coolant pipe that joins to the head near the alternator. it has a alloy housing that fixes next to the inlet manifold and is sealed using a gasket. mine went there once.

oh, one more thing: you cant buy the gasket seperately as its part of the inlet manifold gasket. need to buy a whole inlet gasket and cut off the bit you want.

Could be an engine core plug rotten out.

Not too bad to repair

I had this problem before mate.
found out it was because the fan didn't kick in. fill it up with water and see in the morning the next day to see if / where it is leaking.
But if you do need to drive it to the nearest garage, just keep an eye on the temp guage espicially at traffic lights.

Not necessarily, my R5GTT's water pump went and i'd been driving for ages with it beaming hot and steaming all over the show.

Same with my impreza when a colant pipe burst.

i had a look at it before i dropped it at the garage... filled up the water level and couple of seconds later i could hear water flowing and dripping, so i looked under car and could see it leaking all out from were i indicated before....

so is this a good sign that the head and gasket is ok?
and just a radiator pipe/gasket is burst etc?

i mean the engine did not get past 98 degrees when it first happend anyway?
