you might have torqued the cams down and the piston might have been up and when the valves opened hit the top of the piston and snapped the cam. u might have bent the valve also

I would say they are quite easy to break if you don't fit them exactly right, they are only sand cast bits of steel...

I agree, i was chucking some old XE cam's out and decided to seee how strong they were. They all snapped very easily.

that was my guess as well. did you have the pistons 180 degrees from tdc?

nope, i had the pistons midway up the stroke.....
but i found the sorce of my problemo now:
*grit stuck under 2 folowers, causing them to stick solid in the bore 
*2x number 3 cam caps ....
can i buy a new set of cam caps?...or are they matched to the head??
