but it will read pre-recorded cdr or normal audio cd;s is the drive knackered? cos i cant burn anything onto any blank disc

try a differnet brand of media, some CD-RWs are fussy with media. However if this persists I'd bin it. You can get a 16x DVD-/+RW, CD-RW Dual Layer for £20.
