ive noticed alot of people have used PCI DVR equipment, so perhaps you can offer advice.
Ive been asked to look into a CCTV system for our building. Previously, i have installed DVR units which record onto a 40gb hard disk, and then over writes itself when space runs out.
Ive seen alot of cards that come with its own software, and allows you to record on the PC itself.
All i would have to do is add 2x500gb hard disks and i have a cost effective system.

Anyone have any recommendations? It has to be good fps (100+) and allow for 4 minimum cameras.

I have one off ebay and it does the job, cost me about 100 quid at the time and is 100 or 120 fps or somsething along those lines. The software is rubbish though.
I would however go with network cameras if I was doing it now.

If it was a business I would use a seperate switch\server.

do you have any info on these?
Ive installed normal cameras before, but not network.

Are you able to physically control network camers over ethernet via your PC?

i was thinking about that, and i have found a specific switch for up to 16 ethernet cameras, which i could connect my PC to purely for the data recording, just so i can reduce bandwith on the main network. however i think i would still connect an uplink cable from my main network to the switcher so that it can be viewed from anywhere (with a password), but on your average day, video isnt goign to be played over the main network.

They are just static cameras that you view over the network. If I could remember our IP address I could show you because they are set up to route over the web too... I'll try find out...

You can buy cameras you can physically control over the network as well.

PTZ cameras normally cost thousands though.

TBH our old system like you describe was utter tripe. Had it all ripped out and a brand new dedicated network installed so i can jump on any time anywhere and view them etc.

They look quite good.

I might look into one of they video servers to convert my current setup to a network one but i'll need to find out if i would gain better quality or not.

what do you mean to a network setup?

Those servers have built in web server, and access over internet explorer and also with their software.

Im assuming you can go into a regular switch with just the camera and view it over ethernet?
