Armed with a Hyanes manual and a cambelt kit from Vauxhall I decided to have a go at changing the cambelt on my wife's Corsa 1.4 16v (X14XE engine).

Spent ages lining things up, turned it over by hand twice and checked it all lined up again.

Started it and it did nothing but mis-fire.

So I checked the alingment and the tension again, the marks were spot on and the tensioner was in the "new" tension position.

Started it again and it misfired and idled really badly.

Decided I must be doing something wrong so took it all off and started again, this time I got a friend to check the alignment and tension as per the Haynes manual - all was good.

Started it and the thing reved its nuts of all on its own - racing towards the redline, so we had to turn it off.

As you can tell I'm not best pleased with my day's work!

Any ideas?

My wife wants to use the car in the morning LOL!

Not only do you need a mechanic, your going to also need a marriage counselor

Did you use the right torque settings when you tightened the tentioners and pulleys or what ever?

The tensioner is perfectly set and the pulleys are fitted as per the instructions.

Right well I found the problem - The large pipe at the end of the inlet manifold was leaking - I did the cam cover gasket earlier and had to remove the manifold.

However, it now sounds rather "tappety" if you know what I mean. Almost has a diesel clatter.

With the bonnet open it sounds like it is coming from the back of the engine in the middle somewhere.

you sure that aint just the injectors opening.

You probably not used to hearing the engine with the bonnet up and are also expecting something to be wrong.

Nah its not supposed to be like that - I've had a Sport with the same engine before and that was a lot quieter.

Shouldn't have an air leak on the inlet manifold unless he touched it. How's the oil? What oil you using. What mileage engine etc. etc.

It has been known that if the pipe on the inlet manifold has been leaking then you can loose oil to the top of the head. Try driving it round if it's only tappy sound from lifters. They should pump back up when some oil gets back up there. Or remove rocker cover again and pour oil over all of them. If worse comes to worse try some lucas oil additive. Works magic. Even on my sisters tappy ka.
