got a friend who sent his laptop back for warranty, they replaced the motherboard now he cant log into any xp accounts, just returns invalid password. fuck knows what is going on but this is the information he has fed me.
I thought that you could start XP in safe mode and then it would boot straight to desktop with no login and you could reset admin account in there? I thought this was a blatant vulnerability has it been addressed and hotfixed or something because when i boot in safe mode its going to xp login screen.

Start in safe mode (With the windows xp home disc in the drive), and change the password.

Press F5 when you start your computer up (or whatever option you have) and choose Safe Mode.
When you go to the log in screen, there should be a new user called "Administrator". If he has the classic view (ie the username box and password box) he'll have to type in Administrator and press Enter. It shouldnt have a password for security mesures.
Go to control panel, click on user accounts, and then click on the account he's having trouble with. Choose "Remove Password" and all should be well...

The administrator account has a password for whatever reason, it didnt before he shipped his laptop back for repair.

Administrator shouldn't have a password on XP Home when logging in via Safe Mode. You can't even set a password for the Administrator account either, as windows won't let you.

If it's got a password on safe mode then a cd in the drive won't make a difference, and it's F8 for the startup options. Oh, and yes you can set the XP Home admin password.
As for bypassing it....Dunno.

If you search for resetting xp password there are loads of utils, just make a bootable cd, takes about 5 mins including downloading and burning the cd.
Can't search for stuff like that in work though.
