Bought a Laptop cheap today and it rattles a lot
It rattles when the CPU fan comes on and when the fan goes of it stops again. The fan is moving freely and it doesn't sound like its coming from the fan.
If I put my ear to the keyboard it sounds like its coming from there
Its obviously something to do with the CPU fan though if it starts when that comes on. We stripped it down and cleaned it all and it still does it.
Any ideas please.

Take the fan off the cpu, turn it on, should spin at startup, see if it makes the noise.

The bearings on the fan are knackered.
ALL laptops will have this problem after a while, my HP laptop does it, and a few laptops I've refurbished originally had the same problem as well.
Either buy a replacement fan assembly (say £10 off eBay) or play some music while you're using your laptop!

How would that help if the bearings in the fan have gone?

Its not the bearings. the noise isn't coming from the actual fan. It just starts when the fan comes on. Thats why its confusing me.

The fan will be the only moving part inside your laptop (other than a disc in your DVD drive).
If you don't believe me strip your laptop down then power it up with the fan connected still.

Hard drive also moves quite a bit.
If it's only making noise when the fan comes on though it's either the fan or the fan vibrating something it's attached to.

On older fan units you use to be able to add a few drops of oil in the hole underneath a sticker. Not sure if the newer ones are sealed units or not. A similar replacement will be cheap off ebay.
