Why does it take so long?

I'm Fat32 formatting a totally blank 320gb HDD for my PS3.

I'm doing it through DOS because I tried FAT32FORMAT program and SWISSKNIFE program and neither of them work. So far i'm 53% through after 2 hours and i'm pretty sure it'll give me some error at around 98%.

Windows shows real weakness in this area I reckon coz WINXP won't FAT32 format anything over 32GB - prehistoric or what!

As a guess, the reason that XP won't format over 32Gb is that the cluster size becomes so huge, you get massive inefficiencies with small files.

XP of course does have a preferred alternative for larger drives which co-coincidently also improves security.

Apparently FAT32 has far fewer security issues than NTFS, is that true?

My PS3 will only operate with a FAT32 formatted drive.

I hadn't read that.

Quick format is what you want anyway, that just writes the table at the start, you were doing a full format which blanks the whole disk and takes ages.

Bloody long way round that was

Put the new 320gb HDD in and thought I would be able to use the data on the 40gb drive I had taken out to back up.

To start with I had to download the latest update from sony (version 2.5 was the most recent at 178MB but i've updated again since then), put it on a usb stick the install that.

I thought i'd be able to back up using the 40gb hdd I took out, but the PS3 wouldnt recognise it for some reason so I swapped drives again and copied game saves onto usb stick then put the 320gb back in again and copied to it. Had to download all my game updates though now and its taken hours!! All good now though.
