Basically my friend has just got an iphone and doesn't have a PC/Mac to sync it to activate it. Can she just plug it into my mac just to activate, not getting any of my apps, pics, music etc? We just want to activate it in the meantime whilst she gets a laptop this week

Yeah, just don't set it to automatically sync and you'll be fine.

Plug it in, it will know that it's a different iPhone and ask you what you want to do. You can then give it a different name too
