anyone ever tried anything like this?
a few houses / plots of land around the area that have been empty and abused over the years with no-one living in..
and was having a chat with my dad about this a while ago, went up had a look about, looks as though there was a fire years ago, but for as long as i can remember the house has been empty... there aint no house number and the neighbours houses have names so cant work out the numbers from that lol
Probably get nowhere if i were to try anything, but im sure plenty of people have tried and have managed to get something

You could do a search on the land registry to see if you can find out the owner. Either way, claiming ownership will be pretty difficult and not a quick process.
Basically, you need 12 years unbroken sole occupation of the site. Without that time period it'll never be yours.

You could move in anyway but completely at your own risk and expense. If the real owner turns up and kicks you out they don't owe you anything
Without the 12 years you have no protection.
