do any of you use them, i bought one so i could connect the ps3 and the freeview from the tv to the surround sound but i cant seem to get it to work, i know the cables are fine as if i connect either the optical cable from the tv or the ps3 directly to the surround sound i get sound

The splitters only work for putting 1 output into two different inputs...... you are trying to put 2 outputs into a single input.
It will not work combining multiple inputs into one device.
You need to buy an optical switcher instead.

Had the same problem.
Richie is right, you need to buy a disgusting childs-toy-looking device to do what you want to do.

Or you can shell out on something that's an extra remote and a bit OTT considering TV's now have 3+ HDMI inputs on them.
I've got an Onkyo TXSR308 which has dual optical inputs and digital coax, all of which are assignable to any video feed. It's the only way forward nowadays to cope with surround sound and multiple input sources, and only have a single place to manage them from.
