Hello,
I have an HTC Hero which won't turn on or even charge. It worked fine and then half way through a system update it just shut off.
Anyone know any tricks to get this thing to work?
Only solutions I can think of are:
- new battery
- new cable (don't have anything with the same connection to test it on)
If those don't work then I guess the phone might be faulty.

my htc desire has a fault with the conector on the end of the cable. it charges if you rest it on a surface where the cable has to dangle down so it goes in at a slightly up angle.
new blackberrys have the same charger

The superior iPhone4 is perfect, this is a friend's phone that I'm fixing.
I just found out you can use a normal old mini-usb cable and tried my tomtom car charger with no avail. I'l try proper mini-usb cable when I'm at work on Monday.
I'm guessing it's the phone or battery.
I will try the angle suggestion, thanks

I updated my HTC Mozart yesterday, unplugged it, made a phone call, and half way through the call the phone switched itself off. Wouldnt turn back on or charge or anything.
Took the batter out for a few mins then put it back in and it worked fine.

hmm, I'm thinking it's bricked.
I'm not sure there is a way to unbrick it.

Try this.
1. Switch the phone off.
2. With the phone off, hold the Volume Down button, and while still holding the Volume Down button, firmly press and release the Power button.
3. You'll boot into a menu with a white background, small text and the little skateboarding Android guys.
4. Press the Volume Down button until you reach the Clear Storage option.
5. Press the Power button to select Clear Storage.
6. Press Volume Up to confirm the selection.Sit back while your phone reboots in its virgin state.
If not can you see any menu by holding the home key then pressing the power button?. The HTC site also has original ROMs that you may be able to install via a PC if you can get the phone to turn on as above or to show a menu etc...

Doesn't work
The phone is constantly off
It won't charge or anything, no LEDs.
From what I've gathered the only way to repair it is by using a jtag device, which I'm not going to buy.
At least you can't brick an iPhone.
Just tried another usb cable that I know works, but to no avail.
Battery could be b0rked, or it needs a jtag device because it's shit.

Yeah once you start messing with JTAG devices, goldcards etc.. it gets tricky and a little advanced. I would attempt a battery change if you can find somone with a similar phone. If not then a decent repair shop might be able to sort it. However if's under warranty and you got a genuine update from HTC OTA and that has bricked the phone, I'd be taking it to a repair centre.

yeah, I've been thinking about warranty and shit.
It was a proper HTC update that f00ked it. Halfway through it just shut off and never worked again. I'm thinking it might be fixable via HTC for free.

Could always call them up or send a support email.

Not sure if the Carphone Warehouse deals with their repairs. They did my Nokia N95 and I didn't even buy it from them.

Thanks, the Hero has it's own special USB connector to link up AV devices, but I learnt that a normal old style mini USB fits it too.
New phones now have the new style mini USB.
