I'm probably a dumb-ass for asking this, but is VAG-COM the official software that's used by VW?
If not - is it publically available to buy and use?
And how much does it cost?

If it's one of these products that's going to cost ££££'s, what are the cheaper alternatives to DIY-diagnosing? And do they work fully?

No vagcom is a 3rd party product, can't remember the name of the VW computer.

I've had a couple of copies, even supposedly decent copies, they are all broken, I could have just about had a proper vagcom by now.

Its now called vcds and is widely available for £250 ish from rosstech.
Ive got a copied version that i paid for (£39) a while back with a decent coded cable to the program. I do however have to disconnect from the internet when i use it so it doesnt update as it will stop it being used. The ebay cables are in my opinion garbage as they never work properly. They also seem to have issues with communicating with the car if an aftermarket stereo is fitted due to the diag loom being part of the stereo loom aswell.
Also, the lite versions of vcds is only good for reading faults as it wont clear them or allow you to soft/hard code the vag platform to switch on and off optional extras etc.
This will work fine
