Rite thinking of buying this laptop; as really need to go back to windows environment for work; currently have an i5 MacBook pro; i know its not going to be as good as that but looks good for the spec/price http://www.johnlewis.com/231395873/Product.aspx
What do people think? Or anything better for the money?

I have thought about that but the cost and hassle of putting it on; i work all day in a windows environment on and getting certain chars or shortcuts is sometimes a pain. I dont really use the mac for movies, music etc. like i thought i would so seems a bit of a waste

Yeah thats why i am thinking; i always wanted a mac and thought well i use it all the time so will treat myself but in reality windows is better for me as a .net developer

Bootcamping cost is debatable, certainly you can install windows for free; not sure where the hassle is - takes 20 mins.
As for the laptop, reasonable spec for the price although you could probably get it slightly cheaper else where.

My previous job as a graphic designer was mac only. It was that job which made me switch.
My mate uses macs in his recording studio.
My company will be moving to mac to do accounts soon. Windows is too much of a hassle.

You're both generalising as it's depends on a whole host of reasons why you'd opt for one over the other. Although 99% of the time it's software/hardware dependant, no real reason otherwise.
However i'm not sure how Windows is 'a hassle'; it's no more of a hassle than OSX is. Both OS's have their merits and faults.

There are some specific uses for mac's, I'm aware of that.
99% of the time it's a hindrance though.
Do they do sage for mac? If you have a need to give the data to someone else and it's not sage they'll probably tell you to do one.
I'm dealing with both all day every day and I see the same time and time again.
Your nice shiny macbook looks good when you walk into a client meeting. It's useless when they send you a 2010 powerpoint that won't display properly.

The only thing I can't do on my Mac is Solidworks  but let's not ruin this thread.
Looks like a decent laptop for the money, a Dell might work out a few quid more expensive than the Toshiba but the customer support might be better should it break. John Lewis tend to be quite good with warranty stuff though.
If you cared about it enough, this isn't much more and you get an i5:

Windows is a hassle for the people who don't know how to use computers.
Constant updates, anti-virus, malware, java, flash, etc.
It's fine for me because I know what I'm doing, but for my parents it's a complete nightmare.
I used to use Sage, fucking horrendous program.

Sage make some terrible software, completely agree, it's what everyone uses though so you're stuck.

EDIT - but I do know what you're saying, my old accountants only used Sage. They made me buy it and learn it. Fucking bastards

every thing on the laptop looks good apart from the cpu, its not a bad cpu just not the best, only 2 usb ports might get a bit annoying
