WTF is the "Other"... killing all my space, can't even do software updates on Mac now

I'm sure someone told me before that on the iPhone you need to restore a back-up to remove?

I have roughly the same percentage of "other" on both my Macs. Don't think it's anything to worry about. Will be documents, zip files and the likes.

You could however quite easily free up 10% more screen realestate by not having such freakishly huge dock icons.

When did you last reboot?

I didn't reboot mine for around a month so just used sleep and it built up around 30GB of temp swap files which were deleted on a reboot

20GB of photos? Back them up to a USB stick or hard drive and Dropbox AND a few DVD's or similar and delete

I had shot loads of "other" on my original hdd, had to reformat it because I had it plugged in as an external drive and I deleted every single file but it still showed it

Disk Inventory X is also useful for seeing where all your space is used up.

If you don't use garageband you can save a good chunk of space by removing it

Other can also mean things like virtual images. i.e. anything that does not fall into the main other categories

Language files take up a lot of space too.

But yes download Disk Inventory X (it's free) and it'll tell you which of your porno movies is taking up the most amount of space

I do wonder if these crackpot ideas from Apple makes them lose a lot of customers?

The Air is quite nice visually, but I don't think I could buy one knowing I can't actually upgrade anything

While it probably does loose some customers from it not being upgradable, I am pretty sure they have gained many more customers due to the ability to have the thin format due to not using off the shelf parts. The fact that other companys have taken 2/3/4 years to complete (still not being able to undercut them) with the form factor shows that the custom parts of a crutial part of the strategy.

you can upgrade the SSD if you really want to its just not a simple or cheap thing to do.

How big a percentage of sold laptops do you actually think are ever opened and upgraded by the owner? In the grand scheme of things, I'm guessing it's an infinitely small number.

But I'd think twice my self, before getting an un-upgradeable machine...

There was an interesting article somewhere about the Air being a bit of an experiment to see whether people would actually want to buy a laptop with no user serviceable components in it. They did, the MacBook was dropped and the new Pro was born.

Probably temporary files like on windows you have %APPDATA% (for example) and stored cookies and such, over a prolonged period of time they can take up a few gigs of space.

Also you don't have that much storage space anyway, consider getting an external hard drive to just plug and play for a bit of extra space

The new retina display MacBook Pro is virtually non-upgradeable like the Air from what I understand.

The New MacBook Pro was described as the least upgradable and repairable computer ever made by iFixit!
