I have an old iPhone 4 16GB which is in overall good condition; but has the usual home button which doesnt work! I am thinking of using a recycling site but guessing they will go down on there initial offer as expected but not sure how much to expect
Or would eBay be a better option?

It will be around £20 to fix it so I would just send as is, and hopefully they wont notice it too much. Is it totally fooked or works a bit? You tried resetting it?

Things to consider trying before taking the phone to Apple:
a) Restart your iPhone. I reboot mine every 2-3 days on average and see this happen maybe once per day at most. Past 2-3 days, I start seeing it happen more often.
b) Close your background tasks (often this is the biggest culprit, having too many background apps open)
From the Home screen, double-click the Home button to display recently used apps.
Tap and hold the app until a red minus appears. Tap the red minus to quit the app.
Tap on the Home screen, above, to return.

Try and get something really thin like the corner of some paper into the crack round it and scrape out the dirt.

Go for it mate.
Michelle's phone had water damage (sensors turned red, but the phone was functional).
We didn't tick the box 'My phone could be water damaged' and got the full amount.
