You'd lose 100mm odd of head height.. Granted it would improve heat retention but its a mega bodge surely its easier and cheaper to remove the old coving than splashing out on plaster board, timber and labour to lower the celling?

Although I wouldn't do it in key house in just pull the original boards down

no need to drop the ceiling now anyway. the coving is being removed by the plasterer when he comes nex week
