Did you watch the keynote speech?

That painted silly thing ranks 70th in the list of the worlds fastest supercompters, and the guy laughs when he says it. He knows its pointless.

Yeah I was only half listening to it as it got boring but he also said the computers around that in the list cost 250k and have kilowatt power supplies.

Impressive to see that sort of power in a desktop, I just don't know whether playing games justifies that amount of power. The game they demo'd just looked like an updated version of Carmageddon, which if the game play is similar is a waste of $7k.

At the moment, there is no demand for it.
The most demanding games at the moment are Doom3/Quake4 and possibly the future updates/mods of Half Life 2 as sierra are starting to push the boat out and design their games to be played on gaming PCs not the average home PC.

ive just upgraded my graphics card :

which cost me £400 alone. It plays every single game very very well, i play the games in 1280 x 1024 res, with all details set to max, and its as smooth as a nut. If i decided to upgrade in the future i have room for another one of them (1gb graphics in total)

like you said, there is nothing that would challenge that PC by Dell, and if it was bought anytime soon it would be a waste.

Would your gcard and rest of components pump out 1920x1280 progressive with eevrything full?
If it wouldn't its not good enough for someone wanting to play on their new proper hidef lcd.

at the moment, its the AMD Athlon 64 3800.
It is upgradable to the X2 chips, but not until it comes down in price.

The fact that i had an Ati x800 pro card before that, and also an ATI 9800 pro before that.
They've always been good cards, never played up.

Nvidia now have the edge in terms of graphics I think. Nothing can touch the 7800GTX, especially in SLI mode. Who would pay £800 odd quid for 2 cards though

I will soon be purchasing a 7800GT along with a load of other bits hopefully. It's about time i had an upgrade. Going for the following setup. Should be around £600 quid or thereabouts in total.

2GB OCZ 4000 Memory
Abit AN8 Nforce 4 Motherboard
Nvidia 7800GT
Western Digital SATA 160GB hard drive
Opteron 146 2Ghz Processor (overclocks to around 2.6Ghz easily).

roll on the bonus

would cost more than that with VAT and delivery charges added.

and another £100 for your power supply
i bought the second one down from this list.
You might get given a cheap power supply with a new case if you buy one, but wont be anywhere as good enough for that sort of system.
Not only that, but it will need the more modern connections (e.g 24 pin mobo connector not 20 pin, addition 4 pin for mobo, addition 6 pin for gfx card).

Im not sure i totally agree with that. I have the X1800 XT pro 512mb, which the core chip runs at 625mhz, nvidias 7800GTX chip runs at 580mhz.

Either way, theres not alot in it. Both superb cards.

I don't know what graphics card is faster but basing any comparison on clock speed is like saying my computer is faster than your car.

the 7800GTX's (512mb) absolutely destroy anything that ATi can muster up at the moment, especially in SLi mode
