The boiler is running and appears to be producing heat - the hot water is fine. The pipe coming out of the side is hot but the bit that goes to the pump isn't, the pump appears to be running but it's not drawing the hot water out of the heat exchanger thing.
Boiler is a Powermax 155x.
Any advice gratefully received, I'm cold

What's the presure like?
I'm no plumber but told mine should be below 1.
In the past week i've had the boiler repaired due to a leak, a rad replaced and now have another rad leaking. British Gas are gonna love me when i phone back this week

Just over 1 although I have bled the radiators and reintroduced some water to get it back up to the red marker.

Silly question but is the heating been switched off on the boiler? Mine has two switches and dials, one for the heating and one for hot water.
Also, do you have seperate fuses? I've got two for some reason. Both switch off the boiler.

I wish we had a decent boiler/heating system here. It all looks about 20/30 years old!
If we turn the hot water switch on only, the radiators also get hot, if we turn the central heating switch on only, the hot water is hot too.

the powermax is a combi isnt it? has this problem only started since you have bled radiators?
pressure should be between 1bar and 2 bar Ideally, any less than 0.5 and it wont fire
Sam your diverter valve is fucked

How do you adjust the pressure?

there will be a flexible filling loop somewhere that links the heating and the cold water main, its normally under the boiler

Fixed - the header tank was empty because the stop valve on the fill for it was closed!

What does one of them look like?
I noticed on our hot water tank in the cupboard there is a chunky square blue thing with an electrical cable coming from it, which makes a fairly loud vibrating noise sometimes is that it? Or is it some sort of pump and I'm just talking crap? LOL

Yeah, there's a pressure gauge on the mains in with a big red tank on the top of it, plus a T on the radiator circuit with a header tank near the ceiling above it.

Yes that's the blue thing I was on about, it makes a really loud (at times) vibrating noise (I'm assuming that it's not meant to).
Are they expensive to buy/fit?

is that a solenoid valve then? if it's buzzing its probably the coil that has burnt out and isn't operating the valve any more.

they have a motor in them and a little ball,
the flow from the heating comes up and connects to the one with AB on it (you can see the letters on the branches in the pic)
then A goes to the radiators and B goes to the hot water cylinder
if you have both hot water and heating on the ball inside stays in the middle, if you have only have one on the motor moves the little ball across to block off the pipe that isnt used, so if your heatings off but your hot water is on the ball moves across and blocks A, so the water from AB can go through the valve and into the coil in the hot water cylinder. and vice versa

powermax is a sealed system so not sure why uve got a header tank,
yeah mattk they are big mama floor standing boilers with hot water storage in them, i cant stand them tbh...
there has been a few fatalaties with them down south positive pressure with twin flue setup...
potterton have got them on reduced part list now so not many parts available for them.
they are not nice to work on, was working on one the other day

We had a British Gas engineer come round on friday to change it as our landlord has a service agreement with them, the engineer said our whole system is about 23 years old and because it's on a reduced parts list the landlord will probably have to fork out for a whole new system as it will probably die completely soon.
I asked him "how much does a new system cost, is it like £2k or something?" to which he replied "and a bit more mate"...
When we buy our own home I'm gonna make sure the previous owner has fitted a modern heating system/boiler!

If your getting british gas to install it your looking at £5k+
any one else fiting it you will get the same level of workmanship and ususally the same componants and pay half that
for a normal 3 bedroom house your looking at about £2,500 at least for a full new heating with a combi boiler

Yeah that's similar to the tank.
I phoned Wimpey about it running dry which isn't good for a boiler, they said if they are to look in to it I need to appoint a professional to write a report for them.
