Think tethered means you'd need to reconnect the phone to your PC each time you'd shut the power off.

You cant brick your phone or void your warranty, dont worry!

Update your iphone to the latest software if not already (plug into itunes).

Once updated, download Redsn0w, I think RC15 is the latest.

Then download the latest firmware manually, right click Here. choose Save Target as. Ensure you change the name of the file to end in .IPSW.

Run Redsn0w, and select your firmware.

It'll ask you to put the phone into safe mode, by holding the power/home button in combinations for various amounts of time.
Its unlikely your manage to do this 1st/2nd time, it'll take you a few attempts to get right, but dont worry. If something goes wrong, hold the power/home button until the phone powers down.

Once in safe mode, Redsn0w will do the rest.

If Redsn0w crashes in the middle, (again dont worry), then post here and i'll tell you how to bypass the crash, its to do with multicore CPUs and setting the infinity to a single CPU.

shout if you get stuck, but you have no worries about breaking anything.

Chatpic (from cydia) is good, shows the facebook picture next to each persons SMS,
FolderEnhancer allows you to have scrollable pages in the folders.
PhotoAlbums+ will allow you to manage folders/move/copy photos in your camera roll.
Cyntact shows photos (or facebook) in the contacts.
Truprint allows you to print to any printer.
yourtube allows you to save youtube videos on your phone.

Not everything on Cydia is free.

Cydia is a place for people to promote free & paid for apps which Apple would not allow. Most of the paid for apps are things that break the rules on what APIs they can use and thus would not get approved in the app store.

I use the tutorials on here: http://www.iclarified.com/jailbreak/

I've noticed that a lot of the software from Cydia tends to be pretty buggy and pretty poor quality so just watch out. The whole internet was raving about Notified the other week, and while it's good, it's still amateur and breaks stuff. So, I'm pretty reluctant to spend money on the stuff on there.

Thats why I was reluctant to JB, didnt want to make my phone slow or buggy like my old 3G when it first came out and I JB it.

Ive done my iPhone 4 but limited the amount of JB apps I've aquired.

Ive got, Barrel, Myiwi 4.0, sbSettings(which I use ALL the time),graviboard, fakeclockup and Installous. My phone runs perfectly, well it actually seems faster with fakeclockup. Its when you sgo a bit mad and start downloading the lesser known app that you start to have problems.

Some of the above apps are chargable in Cydia but I just got them off sinfuliphone repo for free tbh.

Since got Air Video, Nike GPS, Sleep Cycle Alarm, Tom Tom Europe, Zombie Smash and Cut the rope (amazing game) off installous.

Saying that I paid for loads off apps off the App store on my iPad, all the angry birds, world of Goo(another great game), NFS etc. Ill probs end up jailbreaking that this weekend though
