Ive never bought/owned an ipod in my life (shocking i know) but the time has come for me to "get down with the kids" lol basically i have an 08 astra which has AUX so im assuming any ipod will fit? I just plug in and play?
What i need to know is which one is best? Do i then download itunes and crack on
sorry for the ignorance, i have never really seen the need for one in the past

i was the same, bought a nano as i bought a shuffle first and then found alot of the ipod headunits don't work with the shuffles.

i had to buy a headunit as well 
ended up costing me loads of money just to get itunes in the car, bought a usb stick first, then itunes songs wouldn't play on it, so bought an ipod headunit, then had to get an ipod, bought the wrong ipod, so had to get another ipod, then had to get a £22 cable
It links up to headunit ok, and can control ipod from headunit rather than using the ipod.
The only thing i don't like is that the headunit won't charge the ipod up unless i buy another lead for about £40
Am sure most ipods will work, except the shuffles, although i'd double check with your headunit, sometimes the AUX in is just a 3.5mm headphone input, so its like using your car as headphones (you have to pick song on ipod still and it won't charge)

Id probably get a touch. I would find that easier to navigate through whilst driving.

I'd get a touch as well, mainly because it's so much better than the rest all round.
Failing that I'd get an iPhone as its less to carry about

If the head unit has an aux in then you can use any iPod, MP3 player, Discman, Walkman e.t.c. that has a 3.5mm stereo jack. iPod Nano's are pretty smart though, Shuffles are good if you want to use it while running or at the gym too.

isn't the touch basically an iphone but without the phone feature?
so same size etc?
quite like the nanos as they easier to hide and don't need to carry it about

yes, ed has said that better, you can use any device that has headphone socket.
i only got an ipod as i'd stupidally downloaded loads of music through itunes and didn't realise you had to have an ipod to play the itunes file format

The touch is a bit thinner, but essentially it's the phone without the phone. It's got the same size hi-res screen, camera and speaker though.

best off getting one with buttons as you can skip tracks and stuff "blind"

You will have to use the ipod to select tracks and stuff, can be a little awkward on the scrolly wheel sometimes. Wouldn't want to do it whilst driving.
But you can make playlists etc or just select an album before you set off.
You could also add all your CDs to pc, and copy onto an MP3 player, without itunes or an ipod.
Don't let Steve Jobs convince you that apple is the only way to go

Unless you're after apps/camera then I'd give the Touch a miss; as said, it's a pain in the arse to navigate without looking. Better off sticking with an iPod with a click-wheel - Nano or iPod Classic (6G), iPod Video(5/5.5G) if you're wanting storage.
Got a iPod Video for the car, never skipped a beat in the 5 years of owning it and it's a piece of pee to navigate. Worth getting a LOD cable (eBay) though and keeping it all line-level rather than running it through iPod internal amplification.

Majority of headunits use the line-out pins on the dock connector. I don't know of any that get direct access to the audio files (could be wrong) and from what I know there isn't a digital connection on the dock connector either. Using a LOD cable would give you a line-out connection.

I use my iPod in a corsa vxr thought standard unit and headphone jack
But my Astra with a pioneer acicx1 and iPod adaptor sounds much better

To get the best sound ideally you should use a USB if possible. To be fair though aux isn't too bad 
As iPods go, I have an old 80gb classic and it's amazing, so simple to use and battery lasts days on end!

I've got a cheapo goodmans one in mine with the ipod connector, means I can control it from the head unit. - With an old shool 60gb iPod
Works fine
