Looking at a flat but unfortunately it doesn't have cable so can't get virgin media & 50mb broadband :-(
Just keep putting the postcode into known websites, is that the best way to do it?
Sky seems best bet. TV & Broadband for about £40 a month. Broadband is 12-19mb which is slow for what im used too...Have to pay for line rental obviously even though I'm not bothered about getting a house phone.
Amy suggestions?

surely whatever isp you use they still use the same wire to the exchange. on that basis just use bt's website to get the best speed for the area
I would rather lose by a mile because i built my own car, than win by an inch because someone else built it for me.

Pop your address number and postcode into this;
http://www.samknows.com/broadband/broadband_checker
Will give you a list of all ISP's which offer Internet services. You'll only be able to get a maximum of 24Mbps through ADSL though due to it's limitations. That's the highest possible too; the further you are from the exchange the lower speeds you get.
Generally Sky, O2 or even TalkTalk are the ISP's to go for with ADSL.

Thanks mate that's perfect.
Talk talk pro reckon they give 24mbs? That must be bollocks then?
Edit: I thought you said 12 for some reason. That's not too bad

Nah it's possible, my missis lives just round the corner from her exchange and sync's at 22 or 23Mbps, probably be quicker if using the master socket.
Most if not all providers will word their services as "up to xx Mb". Like I said it's because most people won't be able to get this speed because they don't live close enough to the exchange, only those who live almost next door will be able to get the full speed.
Basically copper is shit for Internet.
EDIT: Just saw your update, yup 24 is the maximum you can currently get, I don't think it's possible to squeeze anything more out of it, been about 2 and half years since we covered it at University.

Talk Talk Pro - 24mb £7.25 for 3 months then £14.50, plus £12.60 line rental
Sky is 14mb 3.75 for 6 months then £7.50 and £12.25 line rental but it says existing customers only. Could get Sky TV if we went with Sky though. As I say I'd prefer Virgin Media for TV but Sky seems the next best thing but the Internet speed isn't exactly great.
Mostly use the net for browsing, Xbox & ps3 then every now and again download a film which is when the speed would be nice

Any reason Pow? I've not had them for a year now, but other than the terrible support, the network was actually quite good when I had it.
Sky is definitely good though (as long as it's LLU).

You said it yourself John. Terrible support, plus if you download much, they cap you to a speed of around a 56k modem with no notice.

Ahh that's changed then, was properly unlimited when I had it.

John what is LLU? I think Sky is the best option plus previous people had it so the Sky dish is still there
And this might be a stupid question, but you have to pay line rental, does this mean I get a phone number so I can just buy a house phone and plug it in? I wasn't going to bother as I just use my mobile.

It basically means you get cheaper internet, if sky are giving you the offer above it's LLU, if they want to charge you £17 a month got the internet it's not.
For ADSL you need a phoneline, which means line rental and yes you'll be able to use a house phone.

How will you know if it's LLU? And what does it stand for?

Local Loop Unbundling, Sky have their own equipment in BT's exchange.
If you get the 14Mb Sky deal it's LLU.
The non LLU Sky broadband is £17 a month and would most likely be an up to 8Mb service.
Use the samknows link noshua posted and it'll tell you what the exchange has.

That's LLU then, I'd personally go with that and get Sky TV while you're at it.

i have the £17 a month sky broadband and it has a mind of it's own.
can be working fine one minute, then completely go down the next, or just be slow for a day or 2.

Ergh, to be honest I don't think anything is going to be as good as the Virgin 50mb my parents have, so I'll just have to live with it. Aslong as it's quick enough not to be 'laggy' when on Xbox then it'll have to do.

It's just a bt wholesale product, hence why it's utter shit, sky don't really have any control over it.

This, completely different from the LLU one.

I got the entertainment TV package (basic one), Sky+ HD box, line rental free evening & weekend calls, unlimited broadband package for £30 for 6 months & £40 after that
Looked at getting multiroom and having a box in the bedroom, anyone else got this? Is it worth it? It's an extra £10 a month over our existing deal with free box & installation if we go with it now, otherwise it's £49 for box & £60 installation.
My mate said he just has a connection so that he can use the 1 box to watch Sky in the front room & bedroom but he has to watch the same thing as the other TV. It's very rare that we'd be wanting to watch separate things on TV more like I wanna play Xbox so she watches TV in the bedroom

in my old house, my dad wired up the living room box so i could watch the same thing upstairs. was better than watching nothing, but a bit shit.
i'm going with the multiroom box as it's on offer, like you said.
seriously though, watch what you ad to your package as your bill soon goes through the roof. mine was almost £80 this month.
