I thought this was an interesting read, if not something that'll have a huge impact on my choice of phone.

http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/02/iphone-vs-rivals-audio-tests

If anything it just highlights yet another area where I stand nothing to gain from replacing the 4.

Generally pretty impressive results from all the phones, when compared to the FiiO.

Read that last night, pretty shocking the 5 isn't miles ahead of the rest, including it's older siblings.

Unless this research was carried out by a Doctor I'm not interested.

I don't see that as any more shocking than the latest HTC or Samsung model to be worse than the 2+ years old iPhone 4.

As said, generally they all show fairly impressive performance, imo. I'd have expected there to be a bigger gap between the FiiO and closest phone.

The fact they said this:

"Note: the iPhone 5 in this review was running on the Vodafone UK network. It's possible that slightly different audio hardware is used in other variants"

I wouldn't take anything in that link seriously.

Exactly, clearly android fanboys used to dealing with a million different versions of the same phone.

Thing is, what's to say that Apple didn't change the circuitry of the audio/DAC stages between models, for example, to free up space for difference radios? Although it's slim to none, it is still possible.

Although if you're looking for audio quality, iPods and iPhones are not first choices.

Because it's Apple, best phone ever etc, it's roots are in the iPod, which is about music, and they obviously done well with the last 2 models.

iPods are hardly the weapon of choice for 'audiophiles' though. They're about music, but in the sense of making it more portable and easier to buy. I'm sure you know that and are just baiting though, making this response null.

I know it's not audiophile quality. They do try and project that it's the best at everything. Worse than the old ones is the biggest surprise, they obviously know exactly how they compare so knew they were sending out a product that was substandard.

It's not substandard though. The iPhone 5 performs beautifully, just like the other phones.

For a device that has music playback as an added feature all the phones tested do pretty well against a device that's designed purely to deliver good sound.

It's worse than the previous model, and the new model is marketed as being the best at everything. It's not, even compared to only it's predecessor.

How do Samsung or HTC market their phones?

"Nearly as good as the iPhone!"

Of course not!

Every single manufacturer market their flagship phone as the best.

I'm not sure who's put sand in your vagina today and made you pick on me? I'm surprised (although maybe I shouldn't be) that they've knowingly put it out with worse audio that the 4. That's not a thing that Jobs era apple would do.

All you've read out of the above link is "iPhone 5 worse than 4" and come down on that. But you're completely missing the point.

The differences are so miniscule that no one is going to hear them.

Why aren't you asking "why did Samsung not make their phone better than the ancient iPhone 4?"
Why do you insist on focusing on the iPhone's shortcomings when no other phone is doing better? This whole anti-apple parade is getting tiresome as fuck.

99% of people won't notice any difference at all.

My point is basically that even from the beginning, Jobs wanted the inside, and even the machines that build them, to be as good as the outside. This clearly isn't. Whether it's audio quality, or maps, or whatever aspect you want, they are slipping.

John, you make me laugh. Maps is shit = apple down the toilet.

I hope so, then it'll stop retards buying their products and moaning about them when they can't afford the latest one.

maps being shit + ipad mini + people saying 'that'll do' in meetings = apple down the toilet.

Obviously it will take a lot of them before it's noticeable.

There's some truth in this. I've commented before on how Apple's policy used to be "You don't know what you want until we tell you" and now is "Oh' you'd like an iPhone with bigger screen and a smaller iPad? Sure, you know best after all"...

That their phone has taken a slight and unnoticeable step backwards in term of audi quality is not something I see as part of this pattern. Obviously they had to make a few compromises to make the phone smaller and lighter with a larger screen. Loosing an infinitely small amount of sound quality + volume is hardly a huge compromise, especially in the light of it not putting them behind the competition.
