To start off there is no disc inside that we need out, but we do need a working cd/dvd drive.

I have stripped a spare computer that we had lying around (checked it first to see if it worked, which it did), removed the drive out of that and put into the computer that we need. Fired it up and tried to open the drive but no luck.

Does anyone have any ideas of what it could be? Swapping computers is not an option at the moment.

Why doesn't your company just get someone that knows about IT in?

Do any lights show up on the disc drive?

Trying changing the power to it.

Desktop? Make sure the power / all cables are in properly. If its second hand could be faulty?

Yes, I realise that, I meant initially in case it was stuck for one reason or another (user error).

Nobody is gonna be able to tell you why, it'd be a case of trial and error. When I was repairing xbox drives it was usually the band inside that had fucked up.

Reality is that your company sound like right cheap asses

I'm not stripping the CD drive down Fuck that. lol. Although it wouldn't be the CD drive as the doner one works in the PC it came out of.

Yeah but does it work if you put it back in it? It could be faulty and just worked the time you tried it.

Have you tried the drive without it being sat in the bay? i.e. just sitting it at the side of the machine and pressing open?

Why don't you have a local company doing your IT support - who thought it would be a good idea to use a company several hundred miles away that don't offer any onsite support?

Well I think it's highly unlikely a known working drive would suddenly die when being installed in a different PC.

First thing I would check is that the actual power and SATA/IDE cables are properly pushed into the drive.

Second thing I would check is whether the drive is detected in the BIOS.

And then go from there...

But the drive would still open even if it was just the power plugged in and not in the bios? If it's lighting up then that's that surely?.

He said the drive worked in the original computer, but not in this one.

Sometimes (like with Molex connectors) you might think you've pushed the connector on to the pins on the drive but really there is no contact being made so it needs pushing right in.

Well, he said it wouldn't open. He also said they didn't want to use the release hole each time. I took that as it's working but simply not opening.

First of VRS: Fuck off if you haven't got anything sensible to say.

Secondly. Sam, yes mate, the pins are pushed in, wont go any more, if they did I'd end up breaking the fucking thing.

I have no idea who's idea it was to have IT support all the way up there especially when head office is in Uttoxeter.
