Is there a method of network linking up two buildings using a wireless/radio/satellite solution?
Im sure when I worked at the council, two buildings were linked with some sort of radio of mini satellite thing on the walls?
Can you get a reliable fast technology? as its going to be difficult for us to connect these buildings using fibre.

Point-to-point WiFi, microwave or laser link....
Edit - Obviously the microwave and WiFi (outside the standard 2.4/5GHz) gear needs to be licensed. Have a look on 4Gon anyway.

Iv just found some wireless tech but its like £2k, that's for a 1gb link which is what we need but up to 100km, we only need about 50 meters, must be a cheaper way than that
Is this microwave and laser technology equally as expensive?

Tbf that's pretty reasonable for a wireless PTP Gb link (have you got a link to it?); i was (for a project a year ago) quoted double that for each end for a 100Mb link
I'm guessing any form of wired link (fibre etc) is out of the question?
Edit - do you need a Gb link? 100Mb is vastly cheaper these day.

Cheap for short-range 100Mb links (although i'm dubious you'd ever achieve that with NSM* stuff) but you have to go to their microwave 'airFibre' stuff if you want a Gb link.
But if Steve can get fibre blown or run ethernet between the buildings, then he might as well do that.

50m? Cable it.
If not use the ubiquiti stuff. I've had a very reliable 100MB link over about 350m with that stuff

Seems like a fibre cable is the way to go but trying to get the maintenance guys to commit to anything here is like trying to walk through quicksand

Either way your mates are going to have to put their hands in their pockets and pay up.
Do you actually know if <1gb is not enough or are you just guessing?

The path is currently
Main servers --FIBRE--> Music School switch --COPPER--> Junior School --FIBRE--> Reception School.
I want to replace the copper link with something better, basically two whole buildings are relying on one switch and one copper link, I would rather mesh it somehow rather than the current spoke and wheel crap it has currently
The problem is the layouts of the buildings, the Junior school is 50 meters down and across the road, to stick another fibre too it would require permission from public owned houses etc, which isn't a problem but I cant get the maintenance guys to commit to do the work

Why not just double up the copper link with another (there should be a pull string left there) and use that for redundancy? Hell if you have proper switches installed you could even bond them together.

Pull string lol, don't be silly that would be sensible.
We could put two switches in there I suppose

You could but its a school at the end of the day. I'd rather have a cold spare in the IT room ready to be installed when the current one explodes.

Wasn't ducting/conduit used when the current copper link was installed? If so, couldn't it be re-used to blow fibre through?
It certainly sounds like (a few runs of) fibre would be the way to go, at least it then future-proofs it a little

Can you not rod the 50m of ducts?

Its not so much the material its getting another connection down there to turn the connection into more of a mesh rather then relying on the one wire.
It could be copper of fibre but as we're putting a new one in it may aswell be fibre no? means we can stick an 8 core in and have up to 3 other links in there should the original cores fail
