It should already have a live as the cig lighter has its own seperate circuit.
There should be 2 RED wires going into the headunit, one comes direct from the ignition barrel and another RED one comes from the ignition barrel and splits into 2 BLACK wires, one goes to the positive on the battery the other to the fuse box, after the fuse box it turns back into a RED wire again and goes to the head unit.
Also there is a GREY/GREEN wire that comes out of the headunit and goes to the fuse box, which the fuse is shared with the headlight switch and headlight level switch so check the fuses for them too.
(oh yeah the on and off thing is just a normal computer solution )

something like an in line fuse holder, cut the wire, its up to you how you wanna make the connection; bullet connecters etc then just use a glass fuse.
just put this between the wire you cut and connect them together

it could be a case of problem with the ignition wire (as the fuse is fine), the choice is either trace it back to the problem, which could take a very long time, or just bypass the ignition live

Marc, go and buy a circuit tester from Halfords or something before you get started, one like this:
Halfords circuit tester
Then clip the crocodile clip on the tester onto something like the door catch on the b-pillar, and test the pins that attach to the red and yellow wires.
The red should be a permanent 12V source, while the yellow should only become powered up when the key is turned in the ignition.
If both of these work, then there is problem elsewhere in the wiring, and not in the power supply, so you don't need to fiddle with wires from the fusrbox at all if both of those feed correctly.
ring me on the weekend if you need assistance

Yellow is ignition live.
Look at the block on the back of the headunit again, and you'll see the green, grey, purple and white cables - they are all the speaker cables.

Yes Marc, test them in the JVC block, the block that goes directly into the headunit, as it ensures there are no connection issues between blocks too if they both power up correctly.

That may be true on the Vauxhall block, but definitely not on the JVC block, and in all the Vauxhall's I used to fit into at work.
Are you sure its not just yellow in the door loom? I don't have my Haynes handy to check.

yeah the yellow wire defo goes into the head unit and to the speakers in the haynes, but I suppose a jvc convertor changes the wire colours for it own so
Hamester do you have the convertors wiring diagram it tells you the wire colours and what they do.
You do have a convertor don't you?

What does a convertor do?
Ive a CD player, as shown above, placed in a car, not working. And been asked to make it work. Thats all.

a convertor from halfords is vauxhall specific and all you do is plug it into the head unit and the origional wiring block, it will work as long as you havent messed about too much with the origional block.
