I'm giving it a chance to learn from the fact I keep tinkering when it says I'm not in, if its still making a bad choice next week I'll turn it off

Surely if you start turning off those sorts of features is lessons the value of the product as its then mostly just learning your schedule i.e. it provides very little benefit over a traditional system that is properly setup

Really daft question I know but how are home Central heating systems generally controlled?
We have a heater in each room with big white nobs for setting 1-5 on, are these thermostats or just heat settings for the radiator?
We also have a stat in the hallway, but if I switch the hallway heater off, I assume it would take forever and a day to heat the hallway to a temperature to switch the stat/heating off?

Thermostatic Radiator Valves or TRVs. Same as what I have in my house. I have a clock on the boiler that I set for when I want the heating on. Pretty shit really and I know I'm wasting money.
If I was to have a nest I would need to run a wire into the boiler on to the Pcb. Then I don't know what happens to the TRVs.

That's the same as I have, peg timer on the boiler and plain stat in the hall way.
I assume I'd be in the same boat then, id need a cable from current stat location back to the boiler PCB to allow the nest to call the boiler to run?

Nest has the stat and a control box.
Fitted another one tonight.

I scouted around but have signed up to have hive fitted on Friday.
Our house is a 4 year old new build which stays warm regardless but gf works shifts so we are hopeful it'll work better being able to plan a week rather than have the heating on at 5am, 8am, etc for us getting up.
Tbc....

Sounds like the v4.3 update is going to be delayed for a bit

Dave - those charts, are they showing how long your heating was actually active i.e. using gas?
Just trying to work out how that compares i.e. if you had a traditional timer on for 2 hours in the morning and 2 hours in the evening, once up to heat then its only on for short burst i.e. suspect only 'on' for 2 of those 4 hours.

Yeah its showing you how long its actively burning for
Obviously if I was using a simple timer there would be times through out the day when it would become silly cold.. I'll probably see more benefit that most as I work from home.
What is pretty cool is the fact it has now learned how long the house takes to go between certain temperatures depending on the weather etc. so when I'm feeling chilly I can bump it up a few degrees and it will tell me how long its going to take.
Another thing that has been great is being able to bump up the heat when you've been out all-day just before you come home.

Its a shame it doesn't include the average outside temperature on the graph.

I had the loft insulated this weekend to 350mm and the difference on this cold and frosty morning is like black to white, I had extra insulation put over my office too so its about 400mm there, I kept the door shut to the office last night and I'm sat in warm bliss this morning rather than feeling a bit chilly and having to reach for the thermostat.
Its going to be interesting to see the difference it makes to the Nest energy graph especially now the average temperature is about to plummet too.

You lot are probably getting very bored of my nest story but.. ..tough
As per my previous reply we had our loft insulated on the weekend and being as Monday was a particularly cold day I was curious to see what the energy usage would be like.
The Nest system now takes into account the out-side temperature so it can adjust accordingly and also notify you via your energy history if the cold weather caused a spike in consumption.
Last Friday the heating was on for 3 and a quarter hours and Nest says the above average usage was because it was a 'cold day'.. We did have a frost in the morning but it warmed up during the day to about 8 degrees and during the day when the heating ramped down it felt cold in the house.
Monday (yesterday) was a really cold day, it reached minus figures at night and during the day the frost hung around until nearly lunch time.
But now the loft is done the temperature in the house was very comfortable all day and the heating was running for 30 minutes LESS than the previous 'high usage day' which in-fact was no where near as cold out side.
(You can also see Wednesday was a cold day and I tweaked the heating).
I LOVE this gadget

I would give it a few weeks worth of data before making judgements on the loft insulation value.
How much are you adjusting it at the moment or has it now learnt your routines etc.

The only adjustments I'm making at the moment is to turn it down a touch

Mines coming tomorrow can't wait. Might get the stand though and get rid of the wall thermostat. Just means I need to buy a roll of wallpaper and ask my dad nicely to redo it
Btw i can wallpaper, before pow comes in laughing at me
Also told my gadget obsessed mate about it and he's buying one too.

Got it tonight looks like a lovely bit of kit.
Couple of questions:
1) where does the heat link go? Does it go where my current dial thermostat is?
2) if not, where?
My dads installing it and seems to think that is the correct place for it.

Won't be where the dial is, should only be 2 wires going there, you need at least mains plus 2 for the boiler switch.
Beside boiler normally.
